FAQ's Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between plaque and tartar?

Plaque is a sticky, colorless deposit of bacteria that is constantly forming on the tooth surface.
Saliva, food, and fluids combine to produce these deposits that collect on teeth and where teeth
and gums meet.  Plaque can trap stains on teeth and is the primary factor in periodontal
disease.  Brushing and flossing at least twice daily can help fight plaque

Tartar is a crusty deposit on the teeth that can trap stains and cause discoloration of the teeth.  It
creates a very strong bond that can only be removed by a dental professional.

How can I reduce plaque and tartar buildup?

•   Have your teeth cleaned professionally every 6 months or more frequently as recommended
by your dentist or hygienist
•   Brush with a toothpaste that contains tartar protection, such as Crest® Tartar Protection,
which inhibits the formation or growth of tartar crystals
•   Brush and floss regularly as well as get regular cleanings from your dental professional

What causes tooth sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity is caused by the porous tissue in the teeth called dentin being exposed to
certain foods and beverages.  Dentin can be exposed by receding gums due to improper
brushing or gum disease, fractured or chipped teeth, clenching or grinding your teeth, and
erosion due to the aging process

How can I relieve tooth sensitivity?

•   A soft bristle toothbrush, or a powered brush
•   A fluoride rinse or gel for sensitive teeth prescribed by your dentist
•   A desensitizing toothpaste

What destroys a beautiful smile?

Elements such as aging, defects within the tooth, smoking, coffee, drinking of tea, colored
juices, curry, cola drinks, and minerals in well water leave stains on your teeth.

How can I enrich my smile?

Besides regular flossing, brushing and visits to your dental professional, there are several
whitening options available: bleaching, bonding, veneers, and inlays.  Ask us today how one of
these options might help you.
